The Five Do’s and Dont's of Appliance Cleaning
This is a guest post brought to you by Katherine from Part Select. I found it to be a great resource and am so happy to share it with my readers!
Have to every tried to do a good deed by cleaning out your freezer but ended up causing permanent damage to the liner? Or have you added just a little extra soap to the dishwasher which required a lot of cleaning up later? Cleaning mistakes are a pain and can be costly and time consuming, especially when it comes to appliances.
If you don’t know how to clean appliances properly you can cause irreversible damage and sometimes make them unusable. To avoid some headaches you didn’t even know could happen take a look at these five do’s and don’ts of appliance cleaning we’ve put together.
1. Don’t clean the glass refrigerator shelves while they are in the fridge especially with hot water! Chances are they will crack or shatter.
Do remove the shelves and let them adjust to room temperature and then clean them using warm, soapy water. Rinse well and allow them to dry before putting them back in your fridge.
2. Don’t use chemical cleaners inside your self-clean oven. Residue from chemical cleaners can damage the self-clean oven liner and cause the self-clean feature to stop working properly.
Do take out the oven racks and wipe away any loose crumbs. Manually lock your oven door if necessary (some brands lock themselves once a certain temperature is reached), turn the oven to “clean” and set the timer for 3-5 hours, depending on how dirty the oven is. Once the oven is cool, wipe out the ashes. If there are no ashes left then you’ve run the cycle too long, and if there is a lot of debris left then you should run the cycle longer next time.
3. Don’t use flammable products to clean your ceran-top. Surface units may still be hot even if turned off or dark in color. Some cleaners produce noxious fumes if applied to a hot surface and some may explode if left near a hot burner. Keep the areas surrounding your ceran-top clear from any type of combustible cleaning products during and after use.
Do use a cleaning cream designed for ceran-top appliances. The special cook-top cleaning cream leaves a protective finish on the glass to help prevent scratches and abrasions. After applying the cream and wiping it off, buff with a non-abrasive cloth or pad such as a no scratch scrub sponge. Clean the glass surface after each use, this helps protect the top and makes clean up easier.
4. Don’t remove ice from your freezer with an ice pick or any sharp or pointed object. This is the quickest way to cause permanent damage to the freezer liner.
Do remove all of the contents and place in another freezer or icebox. Set your freezer to defrost. If your freezer doesn’t automatically defrost you may need to unplug or turn your freezer off for a few hours. Use a sponge to wipe away the water as it thaws or let it fall into the drip pan. If you are in a hurry and can’t wait for the freezer to completely defrost, use a flat tool such as a soft spatula to scrape off the ice once it has broken up a little.
5. Don’t substitute regular dish detergent for dishwasher detergent. Liquid detergents will quickly fill your dishwasher and ultimately overflow bubbles onto your floor. If you happen to make the mistake of using regular dish detergent, toss half a cup of oil in your dishwasher and set it to the drain cycle to remove the foam.
Do use “low-suds” products in your dishwasher. They are made specifically for your dishwasher.

Trust & Convenience with American Express Prepaid!!
My daughter started second grade today. I look at the other "kids" in my life, and realize my daughter will soon be like them... headed off to college. I had three family friends head off to their freshman year of college last month, and two more started their senior year of high school. It was a summer full of graduation parties and gift giving, but when it comes down to it, you've got to be practical. Gift cards are one of the most practical gifts to give, but take it one step further, with a bit more thought and responsibility and you find the new American Express Prepaid Card.
The prepaid card that American Express offers has its perks, and can be used for so many different reasons. Whether you need to become a better budgeter, need to make sure that the babysitter has money available for the ice cream shop, want to give your teenager a little more freedom with back to school shopping and so much more. The card doesn't have any activation fees like the $4.95 and up that I've seen on some other major credit card branded gift cards. I just can't understand paying money to spend money?? The funds that are added onto the American Express prepaid card won't expire and just in case it gets lost or stolen, its easily replaced (thankfully!!).
American Express is one of the major cards that people have grown to expect such great things from, and their prepaid card isn't any different. The same great roadside assistance, purchase protection and 24/7 customer service is available with the prepaid option!
I love the idea of this card! I love that it can be held onto, and I can just add money to it for whatever reason, instead of throwing away all sorts of gift cards once their balance has been depleted!
I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of American Express and received a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate.

So I've been told to keep my business to myself...
In the past, (not too distant) I've been told to keep my business to myself. To keep the blog more vague. Honestly, I can't do that. This is my place. A "home" of sorts, and I wouldn't change what I do here simply to appease anyone. After a much-needed chat with one of the most fabulous women in my life, (Sarah!) I've come to the realization that there are things that I have to share here. Not just for the fact that I have stuff to get off of my chest, but someone else might be dealing with similar bullshit in their lives, and what I have to say might be a huge help.
The shit that I've been dealing with isn't simple. There are no cut and dry answers. There is no black and white. Only gray. The exhub took off on a Tuesday night a couple weeks ago. Disappeared. I didn't have much of a clue as to what was up, but if history repeated itself, he was out on a bender. Now my life came back down to relying on his assistance so that I could work and not scramble for sitters or pay an arm and a leg for daycare. That Tuesday, that went out the window. The kids were upset, especially Miss Boug, and I had to break it down for her about her father, yet again. I didn't hear from him til Saturday. "I want to come back and make it right. I want to help out with the kids again. I just had to get my head straight." This isn't the first time that my daughter has been heartbroken that her father has been irresponsible. What does a mother do? How do you put a band-aid on a broken heart? I had to yet again tell her, "Your father was only thinking of himself. There's nothing that can be done. Me, you and your brother gotta take care of each other." I told the exhub that he isn't welcome back. His help is unneeded. What he does to the children emotionally is more harm than good. Sometimes Boug is angry. I ask her why and she tells me that its because she can't count on her dad. To be honest, sometimes I'm happier that she's angry, and not sad, because the anger just shows more of an understanding of the situation.
Am I wrong for keeping him from the kids? Isn't it my job as a parent to protect my children from mental, emotional and physical harm? In the long run, at the end of the day, I sit and hope that these two kids of mine don't hold it against me that I did what I felt was best for them. To be honest, I was them at that age. My own father was an in-and-out dad every few years. I think the max run was a span of 3 good years that I could count on him to pick me up and do things with me. Has history repeated itself? Who knows... Life wasn't supposed to turn out this way, but most of the time, it doesn't go as planned regardless.
